BE LIKE MIKE

Back when I was teaching documentary filmmaking, one of the films I would show my class was "American Movie." It followed a neophyte filmmaker and his best friend trying to make a horror film called "Coven."

The filmmaker only kinda knew what he was doing, but he was determined. However, one of the real stars of the documentary was his best friend Mike Schank. He was a childhood friend whose nerves never got frazzled, and he supported his buddy without question. He didn't do it noisily, but did it with his quiet presence and smiles. Everytime I showed this documentary, Mike was everyone's favorite part of the film.

Apparently, Mike just passed away from cancer. I'm sure he's still there for his buddy though, silently watching with a grin.

If you're lucky enough in your life to have a Mike, give him a hug!
