WHY I MADE THIS MOVIE, PART ONE

In film school, one of the questions that we were told to ask ourselves before embarking on a production was, "Why do you want to make this movie?"

I used to think this was a dumb question.

"I want to make a movie because then I get to MAKE a movie! It's fun!"

Except it's not always fun. So on the days it's not, you better have more of a reason than that.

A small part of my answer to this is the accomplishment aspect of making a feature film...which still isn't a great reason.

I'd compare this to those people who choose to climb a huge mountain - "Why do you want to climb that mountain at risk of life and limb?" - "Because it's there. I want to prove it was possible."

I wanted to prove I could make a feature film. To myself. I wanted to justify that huge student loan that I'm still paying off. When I get old and look back on my life, I want to be able to say, "Yeah, I did that."

So that's one aspect of my answer, but like I said, it's not a good one. As a matter of fact, it's kind of selfish. And I can admit that. Thankfully, I have some better reasons that kept me going throughout production. Come back for PART TWO and I'll share them with you! ;)
